Foundations of research methods and practices in music education
Goals & purposes:
The output aims to equip participants with a foundation in research methodology in music and prepares them to implement practice-based research in performing and composing as well as theory-based research in musicology, ethnomusicology and music education. Specific research methods including case studies, documentary analysis, ethnography, survey, experimental research as well as research tools including interviews, observation, fieldwork, questionnaire survey are to be studied.
Summary:
The self-paced e-Learning packages were used as supplementary learning resources to support students’ in-depth inquiry on specific research methods and approaches. The topics for short online interactive tutorial include:
- Why we need research methods, methodology and paradigm?
- Pitfalls in selecting your research methods
- How can we ‘mix’ research methods?
- Thinking critically on your research design
