Giving proper responses to youth in needs of mental health - Depression

Title:
Giving proper responses to youth in needs of mental health - Depression
Goals & purposes:
Upon completion of this module, students will be able to:
(1) Develop the knowledge of and techniques in giving proper responses to youth in needs
(2) Identify inadequate and/or inappropriate responses to youth in needs
(3) Reflect on their personal styles of responding and carry out improvement
Summary:
In the online module, a short scenario on depression in which a helper having a conversation with a youth experiencing mental health issues or emotional disturbances will be produced. In this scenario, the youth will talk about his/her thoughts, feelings, and/or other subjective experiences and proper and inappropriate responses from the helper will be included. The online module will be used in synchronous mode and can be used in different ways depending on the learning needs of the students. To help students develop basic knowledge of responding and the ability to identify proper responses from inappropriate ones, the conversations between the youth and the helper will be shown to the students and students will be asked to evaluate the responses from the helper and analyze the effects of the responses on the youth and the helping process. To help students develop the techniques in offering proper responses, the segments showing the youth expressing himself/herself will be shown to the students and students will be asked to generate their own responses to the youth. Students will also be asked to evaluate the appropriateness and effects of their own responses. As such, they can carry out self- reflection on their learning and think of ways for improvement.
