EAP Kingdom (English for Academic Purposes Kingdom)

Title:
EAP Kingdom (English for Academic Purposes Kingdom)
Goals & purposes:
The main purpose of developing the mobile app "English for Academic Purposes (EAP)" is to promote language learning outside class time and consolidate knowledge of key features of academic language in an engaging way. It provides practice opportunities in consolidating vocabulary and grammar usage typical of academic texts and includes game elements (such as points, badges, and leaderboard) to enhance students’ motivation and engagement in learning outside class time.

The learning app is developed for students taking ENG1376 English for Academic Purposes I and ENG1377 English for Academic Purposes II courses. They require to use this mobile app after lectures to consolidate their knowledge of what has been taught in the courses. At the same time, they submit and rate each other’s annotated bibliographies to promote peer learning.

10% of the assessment in these two courses come from their performance in using the app. Therefore, students need to log in the learning app with their EdU user ID and password so that tutors can record their students’ scores obtained from the app.
Summary:
EAP Kingdom is a place where power is attained by acquiring, applying and sharing knowledge of English for academic purposes. Your power will grow as you gain points and badges by completing tutorials and practices about key features of academic English, and by contributing annotated bibliographies to inform your fellow kingdom folks about the sources cited in terms of their usefulness for your written assignments.

The contents of this app include:

(1). Grammar practices
Chunking (chunk a noun group; chunk a clause); multiple choice grammar practice.

(2). Vocabulary practices

(3). Tutorials on key features of academic vocabulary and grammar

Game elements are incorporated into the app to promote students’ learning engagement and sustain their learning motivation.
