Everyday English in Hong Kong

Title:
Everyday English in Hong Kong
Goals & purposes:
Even though traditional English learning in most of the EFL districts like Hong Kong mainly focuses on grammar drilling or productive skills, i.e., writing and speaking, or even reading comprehension, many ESL learners may still find it challenging to master this language in an everyday real-life situation surrounded by native English speakers. Apart from psychological barriers, based on the natural approach (Terrell, 1977), this may be induced by insufficient daily input.

This mobile app aims to provide a platform for daily listening input to enhance learners' listening and speaking and lexical resources, all at ease. Unlike most foreign English listening apps, the stories included here are culturally adapted for English learners in Hong Kong. It consists of the history of Hong Kong, the daily encounter in Hong Kong, or even some common pronunciation or usage matters.

This app will provide an ongoing self-study platform for students in CLE 1242 to do the daily listening practice. It can help raise the awareness towards different pronunciation features as one of the marking criteria in public speaking exams, which is also closely related to the teaching in the first part of the course (pronunciation features).

In the short term, in each of the episodes, students would learn (1). the targeted vocabulary, (2). English expressions uniquely used in Hong Kong, and (3). pronunciation features used by native speakers in the connected speech (e.g., sentence stress, intonation, etc.). It will also raise cultural awareness among learners through listening to those localized topics.

In the long term, by practicing English listening daily with familiar topics surrounded them in Hong Kong, it is hoped that learners can elevate the sensitivity in learning English naturally in their daily life.
Summary:
Everyday English in HK (EEHK) aims at providing a platform for daily listening

Everyday English in HK (EEHK) aims at providing a platform for daily listening input in the Hong Kong context to enhance learners’ English listening and speaking, as well as lexical resources at ease. The English listening and vocabulary practices in this app are tailor-made with local stories culturally adapted to the history, the daily encounters, and some common pronunciation or usage matters of Hong Kong. Learners are expected to raise their sensitivity and cultural awareness in learning English naturally in their daily life.

The app contains scenario-based videos on real-life conversations, mini-tasks on targeted vocabulary, and video demonstrations of highlighted teaching points, including English expressions uniquely used in Hong Kong, and the pronunciation features used by native speakers in the connected speech (such as sentence stress and intonation). The content is designed under the naturalistic language learning approach and grouped into 3 levels of difficulty.

There are four chapters in each level, and every chapter consists of the following components: scenario-based video; mini-games related to the video content (e.g., fill in the blanks, lexical resources); and video demonstration of highlighted teaching points (e.g., pronunciation features like sentence stress, intonation, etc.).
