– Staff new publication exhibition shelve is now under the staircase. If it is to be there, better eliminate this system. If it is to show it to the public to create a better image, it should be closer to the windows. Some titles in the shelves have been for long time many months.   I submitted my publications months ago, and never there! There should be a person to follow this and create a system of reasonable period per item.Thanks for your comments and reminders.  Staff Publication Display has been relocated back to its original location at the Lounge and the display schedule has resumed normal after the completion of the Spatial Reorganization Project.
– add some ways to reach the reserved collections, for example turn them into ebooks, as they are hard to borrow and there is limited time to study. also, enlarge the electronic data base, ebook and journal collection. Meanwhile they are not user-friendly.Comments noted with thanks.

The Library has already implemented an e-Priority Policy under which higher priority is given to acquiring electronic books and electronic journals than print ones.  Priority will also be given to materials related to academic programmes.  However, some titles are only available in print format and we cannot “turn” them into e-books due to copyright restrictions.

– 作為一間大學,電子書和電子論文的數量太少,而且經常看不到,有必要把更多的資源擺放在豐富藏書量和促進電子化書籍上,而不是只是不停裝修,圖書館最重要的是書而不是外表啊!The Library has adopted an e-Priority Policy since 2013 to acquire more  ebooks and ejournals.  The University has also provided additional funding for the Library to enhance its electronic resources.  With the introduction of Scribd e-books and Chinamaxx Digital Ebook Collection in 2015, the Library now offers over 1.38 million e-books to its users.
– The library should abolish the policy to prioritize e-books instead of printed books. We adopted the e-Priority Policy in view of the cost-effectiveness, 24-hour accessibility and availability of e-books over print books. Based on e-book usage, data and comments from past Library surveys, e-books are actually in high demand, especially among our students.

Renewal or cancellation of a journal is based on various factors such as feedback and recommendations by academics, actual usage as well as cost and budget.  Sometimes we did not renew an e-journal via a particular publisher’s website because the journal is already included in another database package.  Users are welcome to contact the Information Counter if they have difficulties in accessing specific e-journals.

– … 而且圖書館自修位置,7×24 的座位都不太清潔,要注意圖書館整潔問題。 …Our cleaners are working very hard to clean up all public areas every morning.   However, some seats in 24-hour service areas are always occupied and thus unavailable for daily cleaning.  Users may report to the library counters anytime concerning cleaning matters so that we can take immediate action.  On the other hand, users’ cooperation and self-discipline are also essential for maintaining a pleasant library environment.
– I am a regular user of MMW library and I think the hygiene of the washrooms within the library should be improved.

– The discussion rooms are dirty especially the chairs. They are too old. G/F female toilet is smelly. The young librarians are very nice and helpful.All the six former Group Discussion Rooms on 2/F have been demolished.  Five new Group Discussion Rooms with new furniture and new equipment have been set up in the Discussion Zone on 1/F.

Users are advised to report to the Circulation Counter immediately if they found that the cleanliness of toilets is unsatisfactory.

Comments noted and we have arranged regular patrols of the Library.  Library staff will warn users who are found making noise except in the designated Discussion Zones.

However, maintaining a quiet study area will require cooperation and self-discipline of all library users.  When assistance is needed, users can contact Library staff immediately so that appropriate action can be taken.  Library Regulations have also been revised for better management of library facilities.

Users are welcome to report air-conditioning problem to counter staff so we can seek immediately assistance from the Estates Office to fine-tune the temperature at specific areas of the Library.

On the other hand, please understand that the Library building serves both as a study facility and a permanent storage of paper-based books, media and other fragile materials which requires very low temperature and relative humidity.  According to international standards, temperature inside a library should be under 20°C.  Temperature inside our Library is already hotter than standard requirement.  As a result, in the past few years there were over 2,000 library books inflected by mold.

– It would be much more convenient if there is a paper shredder for students to destroy extra important paper documents (e.g. copies of passport, ID card, student card, etc.) in case of the personal information leakage.Comments noted with thanks.  The suggestion is being considered by the Library.

Add color  printers
Two new colour printers with photocopying function are now available on G/F and 1/F of the MMW Library.
– It is better to have a standby computer only for the usage for scanning. Most of the photocopiers have scanning function.   Copyright warning signs have also been posted to alert users that they should not scan excessive amount of copyright materials and occupy the scanning machine for more than 3 minutes.

The Recall System is an important and highly used service which provides a fair and equal means to improve the circulation of popular items.  It is implemented in all local university libraries.  Canceling it will only cause inconvenience to most users.

Most library facilities are available for walk-in access if not booked by any user.  In addition, there are about 20 tables inside the Discussion Zone and Flexi Zone on 1/F for group discussion on walk-in basis. The former 25 Individual study rooms on 1/F and 2/F occupied a lot of scarce space within the library building and served only a very limited number of users.  For better space utilization and to provide quiet study space to as many users as possible, 62 Study Carrels have been set up in the Research Commons on 4/F.  Reading and study areas on 2/F to 4/F have also been designated as “Quiet Zones” for private study.  Hundreds of quiet study places are now provided on these three floors.  All 62 Study Carrels on 4/F are also available for online booking.

This design is stupid.In Sept 2016, the Library has switched the online booking of Group Discussion Rooms from the University’s iBooking System to the Library’s Booking System which allows check-in by one user alone.  However, the Group Discussion Rooms are set up for group use.  The Library thus reserves the right to cancel the booking 15 minutes after the session starts if there are less than 3 persons using a particular Group Discussion Room.

The number of public PCs has been increased from 235 in 2015 to 265 in 2016. The Library will continue to monitor the needs.

Due to resource constraints and environmental concerns, the Library adopts a 4-year replacement cycle for its public PCs.  Newer PCs are generally installed at more highly used areas.

Since networked teaching software still requires a 32-bit Windows environment, the Library’s PCs are restricted by this limitations and we cannot upgrade our PCs with more than 4GB RAM.  But we will install SSDs in all new PCs for better read-write performance.

– 一些學生預約電腦工作站的意識薄弱,經常不經預約而使用工作站,導致圖書館預約系統和實際座位的占有不對應,請圖書館運用更多方法加以提醒。

– 第一:圖書館廣播錄音中廣播員質素太差。聲線難聽,發音不準確。特別是廣播英文時,發音十分不標準,而且語調亦非常欠佳。圖書館各方面都良好,但連英文也讀不好的廣播確實會影響我們大學的給人的感覺和印象,降低大學的質素。其實,在圖書館廣播時,同學曾多次看到一些來自外國的交換生嘲笑廣播員欠佳的英文。所以我們希望學校能在這方面改良一下,不要只顧裝潢外表。建議用電腦聲音廣播,不要用人手錄音廣播。
第二:圖書館書籍位置經常有變化,特別是小學生的課外補充。經常找不到書,就連問圖書館管理員他們也不知道,也不會幫助學生,只是隨便敷衍讓學生自己去找。學校應加強對圖書館管理員的訓練,提高他們的質素。

– Study room also needs the booking system
The Booking System is set up to avoid abuse of facilities.  A booking session will be cancelled automatically by the system if a user failed to check-in within the compulsory check-in period.  The seat will then be released for booking by other users within that timeslot.

The Library will monitor the usage and may adjust the distribution between free seating area and booking area if needed.  Besides, facilities which have not been booked are available for walk-in access by any user.
– 看到地下新裝修那邊有食物/飲品販賣機,圖書館是打算開放飲食規例嗎? 其他大學(HKU CU)的圖書館也有飲食範圍,但它們的圖書館很大加上餐廳離圖書館有一定的距離,所以才開放飲食規例給讀者,而且開放的地點在圖書館來說是比較偏僻或沒圖書供應的樓層。但教大的餐廳/便利店也在圖書館附近,步行距離不用10分鐘… 就算由4樓走去LP層也才10分鐘,有必要在圖書館飲食嗎? 坦白說,現在也很多讀者在圖書館飲食(特別是地下),他們從來不會清潔自己的飲食範圍,常常看到地下的電腦枱都髒髒的,但有看到圖書館職員及清潔工人每天都會執拾及清潔但還是阻止不了啊… 如果圖書館真的開放飲食範圍,已經可以預計到會大大增加職員跟清潔工人的工作量,而且也看到書本會越來越髒。希望圖書館管理層可以好好考膚!!!Comments noted.  The Library has considered carefully the pros and cons of different drinking and eating arrangements, and have consulted different user groups.  As a result, the Lounge on G/F of the Mong Man Wai Library has been designated the only area for food and drinks.  It has instantly become the most popular place in the Library and is well received by our students.   We will closely monitor the usage, and we believe our students are considerate and will make proper use of this new facility.

Users are encouraged to contact the Information Counter in person, by phone or by email for assistance if they need assistance on finding required information.

Staff and students are also welcome to send specific recommendations, including databases, e-books and e-journals, to the Library anytime.  Free trials will be arranged and the product will be evaluated and considered subject to user feedback and budget consideration.

Meanwhile, a new shared Library system is being acquired by all 8 UGC-funded university libraries and a new search interface will be adopted in the second half of 2017.  The Library Website will also be revamped shortly.

裝修後的圖書館,無疑是外觀簇新、設計新穎,連燈光也更亮麗,但圖書館現在給我的感覺反而像翻身了的商場般,徒添了不少華而不實的設施,却是舊瓶新酒。例如,電梯前的座地顯示屏,只不斷的在重覆播放圖書館的宣傳片段,浪費電源有欠環保之餘,指示館藏的功能反而未能彰顯,曾試過多次進入樓層後再折返找尋館藏的指示方向;又如新設的創作坊、媒體製作坊、迷你劇院等,都是一堆高科技硬件設備在堆砌,只供一小撮有需要而又懂用的教大師生使用;且圖書館內各樣設施差不多都要預約才可使用,變相只供教大師生使用,既然如此,為何校友圖書證申請表上沒有明確寫出?
外觀冠冕堂皇、設備琳瑯滿目,但館藏、服務、支援呢?只能說換湯不換藥。裝修後圖書館的館藏,數量不見得有所增多,而擺放我至今還未能適應,無他,施工期間轉換次數頻繁,現在的指示也有欠清晰。…..

青菜蘿蔔各有所愛,我還是較喜歡以前圖書館略舊的書卷氣息(惜現在恬靜雅緻不再,只餘摩登時尚,從何時開始飲在圖書館飲食已變得光明正大?)。在此聊聊幾句,望教大大興土木裝修圖書館之際,也能培訓職員、提昇服務質素。

Estates Office and the Library have spent enormous efforts in consulting different user groups when re-designing the Library layout, including a series of public forums.  The new design is appreciated by most of our users.  But we fully understand that we cannot please every single user and our services still need refinement.

All library users, including external members, may use most library facilities if they are not booked by eligible users.  We believe it is totally legitimate to give priority to EdUHK students and staff in using EdUHK Library resources, and we will uphold this policy.

The current INNOPAC library system can only send one courtesy reminder email or SMS message before the due date which is currently set at three days in advance.

Ex Libris Alma, the new library system shared by all 8 UGC-funded university libraries, will be implemented in mid-2017.  Hopefully the functionality of courtesy reminder could be enhanced by then.

A coffee machine has been installed inside the Lounge on G/F of Mong Man Wai Library.  100 cups of free coffee will be offered daily to students and staff, Monday to Friday starting from 8:15 am, on a first-come-first-served basis. 

Vending machines providing drinks and snacks are also available on 24-hour basis at the Lounge on G/F of the Mong Man Wai Library.
– 24小時開放圖書館地下洗手間非常好,女生不用半夜做功課懷着懼怕的心情出去找手間。考時期間開放時段非常好(加長開放間,對兼讀學生排常有幫助)。但很可惜圖書館地下沒有彩色列印,做教材及交功課非常不方便,一所專業/大學圖書館,難以想像/不應一部彩色列印機也沒有,學生是非常需要彩色列交功課及做教材(圖表、圖片及美術科),彩色影印作用不大,學生交功課/做教材未能列印,可來影印?在非繁忙時間借書時如有需可否要求職員蓋印還書日期?(例如,沒有人排隊,職員好得閒),借書時不應一刀切任時段間也不蓋還書印,每一個時段都有學生排長龍借書嗎?圖書不應行政方便,而忽視學生借書蓋印需要嗎?職員在閒着為何不可提供蓋還書印?現在借書好有壓力,因為好難記得每本何時借?何借還?很怕被罰錢。雖然有催還制度,難度忙着工作、進修,每天也要開上網看看那本書被催還嗎?可否在學生借書時,問學生是否需要蓋還書日期?因為不同時段借十本以上的書,學生會好混亂那本書可時還書?這也是其他同學遇到的問題,請體恤學生的需要及困難!(不樂觀圖書館/館長/職員會彈性處理為學生蓋還書印日期),因為不是每個人也願意體恤別人需要或多角度看問題。
整體來說圖書館職員親切友善。

Two new colour printers with copying function have already been installed on G/F and 1/F of MMW Library.  Wi-Fi printing and copying is also supported by these two new machines

The Library has asked about not stamping due dates in the last Library User Survey.  Majority of respondents supported this arrangement.  For users who prefer stamping due dates, date due slips and chops are available for self-service at the Circulation Counter.
– Lean periods for senior research staff are short by international comparisons. The frequency of book recalls is disruptive to prelonged engagement of library resources for research purposes. Comments on loan period will be considered in our regular review of loan rules.  For Recall System, please refer to our earlier responses.
– Loan period is too short.  The due date should be fallen on weekdays only so that staff could return the borrowed materials on time.  Books are too old and outdated.  Library should buy more new books so that staff could make references to.Comments noted.  Please see our earlier responses on loan period.

Loan quotas for academic staff and students has been increased from 60 to 80 and 40 to 50 respectively with effect from 1 July 2016. Academic staff may contact the Library if they have any special needs.

圖書館書籍過期後,必須親身到校園圖書館流通服務方能辦理續借,這樣實在太不方便,尤其大埔校園圖書館地處偏僻,交通不便、通勤耗時。

參考其他大學圖書館(如地段優越,位處紅磡的理工),當書籍過期後,若沒有其他讀者要求借閱,原借閱者是可以網上辦理續借的,成功續借後亦不會追收罰款。

這樣好處不少:

1:若過期書籍數量很多,而借閱者又因教習需要保留,過期續借可省卻雙方辦理手續續借、及來回校園的交通時間及金錢;
2:若遇上學校長假期、公幹外遊等,教職員或學生未及網上續借,但又無法親到圖書館歸還或續借,只能無奈增加罰款,這亦令人有對圖書館思維和網絡技術不靈活的觀感。

若果技術可以的話,在這些細節上可多從讀者角度思考,應允許原借閱者過期後某個指定期限(如一兩三天內),進行續借,方便彼此相得益彰。

另外圖書館要與時並進,亦應多借鑒其他大學圖書館的管理和運作。


要求教育學院圖書館,考慮仿效嶺南大學及浸會大學簽訂協議,如以互相對等開放資源為由而請求其他個別院校對本校自資學士課程進一步開放圖書館資源。參考連結如下:

All library collections are filed by Library of Congress Classification Scheme.  Materials on the same subject in different languages are filed together to provide a one-stop access for users.

我相信這些情況在其他大學圖書館甚少發生,至少我在其他大學修讀時從未遇到過。

Photocopier on 4/F has been moved away from the Learning Commons.

Library staff will take action on users who are found eating and drinking outside the Lounge.  However, maintaining a clean and tidy study area will still require cooperation and self-discipline of all library users.  When assistance is needed, users can contact Library staff immediately so that appropriate actions can be taken.  Library Regulations have also been revised for better management of library facilities.
