Collection and electronic resources

User’s commentsLibrary’s Responses
– employ more Chinese specialist to develop the chinese collectionSelection of library resources is a joint process between library staff and academic staff. Over the past years, the Library has been adding a number of major Chinese digital collections such as 中國基本古籍庫、文淵閣四庫全書電子版、四部叢刊電子版、漢籍電子文獻資料庫 、晚清期刊全文數據庫、民國時期期刊全文數據庫、漢達文庫 as well as some big ebook collections from major Chinese vendors like 同方、方正、萬方、超星、華藝、Hyread、五南, etc. which were selected not only by library staff but also by academic colleagues.
All EdUHK staff and students are welcome to use the Online Recommendation Form at https://www.lib.eduhk.hk/recommend/ to send specific purchase suggestions to the Library.

– For our 25th Anniversary, I suggest if we shall have an archive on the history of EdUHK (from 1995 ; anything that reflect the change) in collaboration with HKME, and maybe can show to public sometimes, also digitalized former magazines / booklets onlineComments noted with thanks and will be considered.
Most HKIEd publications and some of the former Colleges’ publications are already digitized and made available to the public via the Library’s EdUHK Collection at http://libdr1.eduhk.hk/

If users come acorss any problem using e-books or using any other Library subscribed online resources, they should contact us immediately at libinfo@eduhk.hk/ 29486653 so that we can investigate and fix the problem ASAP. On the other hand, some e-books may be available only for a limited period as trial, and eventually not acquired by the Library if there is no evidence of usage. Titles in some e-book packages may also be removed by the publishers due to licensing issues.

By default, our iSearch system will display article information regardless whether the Library has online full text subscription or not. If users want to limit results to articles immediately available online, they could simply click the filtering option “Full Text Online” under “Availability” at the right hand side panel of the results list in iSearch. If the journal article is not available in EdUHK Library, then students may reqest Inter-library Loan Services.
For assistance, please contact us at the Information Counter / by phone at 29486653 / by email to libinfo@eduhk.hk.
With a limited budget, we have to put higher priority to materials in high demand and rely on inter-library loans to meet the demand for some expensive items with low usage at EdUHK. Nonetheless, we shall always respect the collective decision by academic departments as long as the cost is within the departmental allocation. Academic staff are encouraged to discuss with their colleagues and seek support and endorsement of the Head of Department as necessary.
– buy duxiu Chinese database as soon as possibleFree trial of 「讀秀學術搜索平台」has been arranged before and it was not considered due to cost and copyright issues.
We have been subscribing to one of the largest Taiwanese online resources, Airiti Library 華藝線上圖書館, for years, providing thousands of e-journals and electronic theses to EdUHK staff and students. Over the past few years, we have also added new databases such as 臺灣文學知識庫 and we are now providing around 40,000 e-books on Airiti iRead 華藝電子書, HyRead, 五南電子書, 超閱網 (香港聯合電子出版書刊) and we shall continue to add more Chinese e-resources as appropriate.

– suggest to promote more on electronic resources to staff and studentsWe have been promoting new library resources and services by various channels such as e-mails and Intranet announcements, digital posters, promotional videos, orientation programs, training workshops, in-class demonstration and more. Comments noted with thanks and will be considered.
Although the Library has adopted an e-priority policy since 2013 to acquire e-books instead of print copies whenever possible, we still have a large collection of print books being used as course readings. Instructors are encouraged to contact us and discuss on their specific needs and possible solutions.
Some publishers have also been offering support to university libraries by opening up their e-resources during this difficult period and we have compiled a list of resources at https://libguides.eduhk.hk/free-resources.
– It is important to keep buying books in hard copies. The e-priority policy adopted by the Library aims at allowing more users to access required information more efficiently anywhere anytime. However, academic colleagues can indicate on their purchase recommendation with explanations on why print copies should be purchased for these particular titles instead of electronic ones.
– Any book that is going to be read whole needs to be in the collection as hard copy. Periodicals that are meant for browsing, such as newspapers, need to be in some better format than Factiva. When I use Factiva, I copy the text I want to read and paste it in MW Word so I can adjust the format myself. This is tedious and time-consuming.The e-priority policy adopted by the Library aims at allowing more users to access required information more efficiently anywhere anytime. However, academic colleagues can indicate on their purchase recommendation with explanations on why print copies should be purchased for these particular titles instead of electronic ones.
Certain font attributes may be adjusted via web browser or windows customization. And in some cases, a newspaper in Factiva may also be available elsewhere such as PressReader that we also subscribe. For assistance, please contact us at 29486653 or email libinfo@eduhk.hk.
EdUHK students and staff can already access remotely from home to most of the online resources provided by the Library. In addition, some publishers have also been offering support to university libraries by opening up their e-resources during this difficult period and we have compiled a list of resources at https://libguides.eduhk.hk/free-resources.
– I would prefer that faculty requesting the purchase of an item be allowed to simply provide a link to Amazon or Worldcat: at present it takes five minutes to copy the information from Amazon.Comments noted with thanks and we will study.
– Sometimes I find resources that I really wanna use but I could not access to it, I ask for help from library staff by email but they still could not solve my problem finally. And there are also incomplete CNKI database, I sometimes cannot get access to resources.By default, iSearch system will display article information regardless whether the Library has online full text subscription or not. Due to budget limitation, we only acquire selected subject packages of CNKI.
– Wider coverage of journal articles. Also, very importantly, longer time for the duration of staying login! There were many times that I was reading the searched articles and when I went back to the search engine to look for the next searched article, I was already logged out. It is quite annoying to my research work as I will need to login, find the data base and search everything all over again.Normally a 15 to 30 minutes inactivity timeout is allowed for most online databases. Most databases also include functionalities allowing users to set up personal accounts and save their search results, search commands and even generate monthly alerts on useful items. For assistance, please contact the Academic and Learning Support Section at 29486653 or email libinfo@eduhk.hk.
– The electronic resource base of the library is not stable sometimes, hope can improvePlease contact us at 29486653 or email libinfo@eduhk.hk and provide additional details for our further investigation.

We update the HK School Textbook Collection every year based on the Recommended Textbook List of EDB (https://www.edb.gov.hk/rtl/).
However, please note that while we want to purchase a complete set of teacher editions as far as possible, some publishers insist to sell teacher editions only to teachers or schools directly, but not to the Library.
All EdUHK staff and students are welcome to use the Online Recommendation Form at https://www.lib.eduhk.hk/recommend/ to send specific purchase suggestions to the Library
We update the HK School Textbook Collection every year based on the Recommended Textbook List of EDB (https://www.edb.gov.hk/rtl/).
We have been adding as many digital school textbooks as we can. But most publishers are charging for very expensive annual fees by headcounts which we simply cannot afford.
All EdUHK staff and students are welcome to use the Online Recommendation Form at https://www.lib.eduhk.hk/recommend/ to send specific purchase suggestions to the Library

– please add some E-textbook for the block practice student, there is no any E-text book for us to get access
Special services and arrangements have been provided during COVID-19 pandemic for virutal BP students with details already sent to all block practice students via e-mail.
We have been adding as many digital school textbooks as we can. But most publishers are charging for very expensive annual fees by headcounts which we simply cannot afford.
– suggest to have corner to introduce more about library new service and e-service. also, suggest to enhance the web-perform to make it more user friendly for routine service such as loan facility icon and ebook, newspaper icon so that we can easy to retrieve and search useful data.

Space and facilities

User’s CommentsLibrary’s Responses
1. More discussion rooms are recommended to be built for discussion with certain level of privacy.
2. Opening Hours – It is recommended to extend the service hour of 1/F to 7X24 or at least until 12 n.n. every day. Students can borrow book with smart borrowing machine themselves.
3. Photocopying Facilities – It is recommended to adjust (lowered) the charges of photocopiers. The Color printing fee is too expensive, and not comparable with printing meter charges (as per my understanding, color printing meter charge is just about $0.7/side (regardless of A3/A4). Future photocopiers are recommended to equipped with binding/ punching unit, to help booklet creation.
4. EI-Hub – The desk in EI-Hub is recommended to equip with computer and or Apple TV.
5. Discussion Area – It is recommended to replace defect “”whiteboard sticker”” and whiteboard marker, and re-organize the cable lines inside the discussion room.
6. Multimedia Equipment for loan – Insufficient equipment. It is recommended to increase the number and variety of equipment.
7. Future Classroom/ Mini Theatre – It i s recommended that students can borrow these facilities (maybe in three or five days) before the booking date, so that staff could be able to borrow in advance, and if these facilities are empty, students are able to use them.”
1. A total of 6 group discussion rooms (5 on 1/F and 1 on LP/F) are currently provided for student booking. Due to space and budget limitation, there is no viable option to build more group discussion rooms inside the Library without reducing the number of open discussion tables which are also in high demand.
2. The number of overnight users does not justify opening more floors on 24-hour basis which is both costly and not environmentally friendly. Users are encouraged to plan ahead and get the materials from the shelves or borrow the items during normal library opening hours instead of checking out these items during late night.
3. Library photocopying / printing services are running on a self-sustainable basis. All fees and charges are being reviewed every year and all cost factors including the cost of machine will be considered on top of running cost such as meter and paper charges. After a recent review, the colour photocopying / printing charges will be lowered in July 2020.
4. Comments noted and will be considered.
5. Please approach counter staff for replacement of whiteboard markers if necessary.
6. Comments noted and will be considered based on actual usage and budget available. Production equipment is also available for loan from OCIO and LTTC: https://www.lttc.eduhk.hk/?p=31141
7. Comments noted and the booking policy of Mini Theatre will be further reviewed. It is also our intention to open up the Future Classrooms for student access when no class is in session.”
– due to the COVID 19; i cant see any points that Library need to block 3/f for users to use it. Now, we need more spaces, all people are now squeezed to 2/f. I found that there are so crowded there. I think we need more spaces under this difficult time. But not to close part of the facilities.COVID-19 is a serious epidemic and we must take all necessary measures to protect both library users and library staff. A number of library facilities and areas have hence been closed for infection control during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic. With the improved situation in Hong Kong, most facilities and area, including 3/F of the Library, have been re-opened.
As indicated by the consistently high booking rate of Study Carrels on 4/F, there is a very high demand for quiet study space at the Library. If the Study Carrels are being converted to individual study rooms, we won’t be able to meet such high demand.
All chairs on 4/F have been replaced.
Users are advised to make advance booking of library facilities, including seating with computers. Based on the Library facilities booking statistics, seatings with computers, especially on G/F, are seldom fully booked even during peak seasons.
A number of library facilities and areas have been closed for infection control during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong.
– Please clean the ground floor toilets thoroughly
– thanks for the security team, especially those who have to stay outside during their duties. thanks for the janitors’ work during this period (COVID-19) of time. stay healthy and safe.
– More coffee to be provided.
– Coffee machine
Comments noted with thanks and has been forwarded to Estates Office.
– dirty washroom and area
– Not clean enough.
– The toilet on G Floor has big cockroaches
Please approach counter staff for assistance if special attention is required.
– I think the lounge is a place need to be reconstructed. The capacity of the lounge is not enough. Some students may occupy the seat for a long time. But the sofa a rather long but only one person occupy it.We will continue to monitor the usage of the Lounge and may consider allowing users to make advance booking for highly-demanded areas (we have already assigned the high back benches at the Lounge as booking seats due to high demand).
Users are also encouraged to approach counter staff and let us know if there are users sleeping on the sofa or occupying multiple seats with their belongings
Comments noted with thanks.
In the future, please report the case to Counter staff for immediate action.
We are ordering notebook computer tables in the Lounge.
– maybe the library staff could pay more attention to the loud speaker in the library!Public announcements are made during the special condition of pandemic when our normal services were affected and extra health precaution measures are required. They are broadcasted on a need basis and at a minimal interval.
– Sometimes there are people who talk quite loudly in the quiet zones. Although discussion can be understood, and most people can bear some noises, but sometimes the voices of people are simply too loud, and they also slide their chairs to each others’ computer desks while engaging in heated discussions. I hope the library staff can tell them quietly to keep their voices lower or take their discussion to the 1st floor or the LP floor
– Please help to manage a quiet study environment.
– some students often make video calls loudly on groud floor,The quality of study is extremely affected.

– Please provide a bit more pick-up stations if possible.Comments noted with thanks and will be considered in future review based on the actual usage and needs of library users.
– The self-service borrowing machine sometimes can’t record all books in a pile and have no alert when we leave the library. It is better to instruct users to put books one by one on the machine. May consider to install a video cam in case there is any dispute.Comments noted with thanks.
Normally multiple books can be borrowed and returned at the Self-service Stations although some books could be more difficult to be detected due to technological constraints. Users can print a reciept of the books borrowed or returned using the Self-service Stations and make sure that there are no problems.
Due to technical limitations of the hardware, sometimes users may need to borrow / return the books one by one, or spread open the book for better detection. We apologize for any inconvenience caused particularly when we could only provide limited services during the pandemic
– I think It is better to stick some guidance on some facilities so I will not be confused about how to use it.Comments noted with thanks.

– Spacious and nice seating arrangement
– The library is a great space
– Very Good, comfortable & good for study
– very nice after the renovation, and appreciated of the – continual improvements of the leaning space
– Very thoughtfully designed, except that there is not enough space for new books.
– Thank you for making the library a clean and comfy place.

Services and management

User’s CommentsLibrary’s Responses
– Poor management. Shame to you. What a reason library reject us to use library??? What a evidence Alumni will have COVID-19 virus???
What a HK education university Library not support HK school teacher???
Allowing only students and staff to access the whole campus is a university-wide arrangement which is also adopted by most local universities for infection control. We are sorry for the inevitable inconvenience thus caused to our External Members, including Alumni. But health and safety of students and staff is our utmost concern which we will not compromise.
With the improvement of the COVID-21 situation, we are gradually resuming External Members’ access to the Library. We will extend the membership of our External Members for the period affected by campus access restriction, including Alumni holding our free Reader Cards. Details will be announced once available.
We have also resumed processing of card renewals and new card applications, and we are sorry for the earlier delay. We will inform applicants the access restriction and will only process the applications with their consent.
Covid 19. 舒服是 professor. Librarian.
Since COVID-19 is a serious epidemic, we cannot take any risk and must use all necessary measures to protect both library users and library staff. During the peak of pandemic, we had already tried hard to maintain 40% to 60% manpower onsite at back office when most local university libraries were either completely closed or opened in limited hours without face-to-face counter services.
With library staff stationing at the back office of counter, the normal response time to a call for service should be very short. We apologize if there were particular incidents when our staff were fully occupied and causing users to wait for extended period of time.
Library counters have been re-opened in early May when the pandemic situation improved.
– Suggest to open some areas on Sunday, especially during exam and handin period of assignments for those seeking for the studying place at weekend
– Discussion room should open on Sunday as some student will go back to school and discuss their project
With the improved COVID-19 situation, Sunday opening of MMW Library has been resumed in May.
– I hope to extend the opening hours of the library because there are many deadlines in April, I need to study in the library. Thank youThe Library opening hours have been shortened during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, MMW Library had extended opening hours to 10pm on weekdays since mid-February. Sunday opening was also resumed in early May.
During the Examination Opening Hours period, all floors of the Mong Man Wai Library are opened at least until midnight even on public holidays.
For public holidays during non-examination period, the number of users does not justify opening more floors which is both costly and not environmentally friendly.
Since COVID-19 is a serious epidemic, we cannot take any risk and must take all necessary measures to protect both library users and library staff, including closure of certain areas and reduction of seats.
We have also maintained opening hours up to 10pm on weekdays during the peak of pandemic while most other libraries were either closed or opened only until early evening.
With the improved situation, we have re-opened most facilities (with infection control and social distance implementation remain in effect) and mostly resumed normal opening hours in May 2020.
We were open on Saturday even during the peak of pandemic.
With the improved situation, Sunday opening of MMW Library has been resumed in early May.
– the time of opening now is too short and unacceptable
Extension of opening hours on different floors will be considered in future review based on actual usage and needs of library users.
Comments noted with thanks.
Extension of opening hours on different floors will be considered in future review based on actual usage and needs of library users.
Suggestion for book talks will be considered.
Lighting and air-conditioning inside the library needs to fulfill different requirements and needs, including visibility and preservation of library materials. We will constantly monitor the Library’s physical environment and make adjustments if necessary.
The Library’s “”LibMap”” mobile is the best tool for users to locate a particular item. However, we have to suspend its update during this summer as we are reorganizing all book collections inside MMW Library. LibMap will be updated once the book reorganization exercise is completed in late summer.
A number of library facilities and areas have been closed for infection control during the peak of COVID-19 pandemic in Hong Kong. With the improved situation in Hong Kong, most facilities and areas have been re-opened, and 24-hour opening on G/F and LP/F, have been resumed.
– Extend the opening hours of all floors until 12 a.m. for the whole term time, especially for some final year students that need to do their honours project throughout the yearComments noted and will be considered based on the actual usage and need of students, as well as environmental concerns.
The number of overnight users does not justify opening more floors on 24-hour basis which is both costly and not environmentally friendly.

Normally multiple books can be borrowed and returned at the self-service stations although some books could be more difficult to be detected due to technical constraints. Users can print a reciept of the books borrowed or returned using the Self-service Stations and make sure that there are no dicrepancies.

Counter services have resumed normal in early May.

When the pandemic was reaching its peak in HK, our counters have remained open but operated on a call-for-service mode. We have put up signs at the counter to inform users that library staff were working at the back office with the phone number to call if they need help. It seemed to have run smoothly and many users have made use of this service. All counter services have resumed normal since early May.
– reopen the service counter as soon as possibleSince COVID-19 is a serious epidemic, we cannot take any risk and must take all necessary measures to protect both library users and library staff.
Library counters have been re-opened in early May when the pandemic situation improved.

Despite shortening of counter hours during the peak of COVID-20, users could send their enquiries to us by e-mail after office hours. As noted in our various announcements and pop-up message on the Library Website, users need not worry about extra overdue fines if they could not return borrowed items due to pandemic as all loan issues would be handled with flexibility.
– Please extend the book return deadline because the rest of the semester is online. Non local students who have borrowed books are unable to return them until the next semester.
– I really appreciate that the library has extended the loan period during the last sem and this sem due to unforeseen reasons. However some students may still not return to Hong Kong in June to solely return books, can the loans be extended till one week after the beginning of next sem?
We fully understand the situation and have made various announcements assuring users that all borrowed library items can be returned one week after classes start on campus tentatively in early September. Any overdue fines incurred during this period would be waived.
We fully understand the situation and have made various announcements assuring users that all borrowed library items can be returned one week after classes start on campus tentatively in early September. Any overdue fines incurred during this period would be waived.
TKOSC Learning Commons was re-opened in April already.
– Allow auto-return in self-service machines for HKALL itemsAll HKALL items cannot be returned at self-service stations as they are not EdUHK Library items and not compatible with our Self-service Stations.

Students must maintain their current student status in order to enjoy library privileges as a student. Unfortunately, extension of student status is under Library’s jurisdiction.
– fulltime 2019 fall masters? This year we really have difficulties in using library resources, hope you could kindly consider for us.Please approach library counter or contact us by e-mail or by phone and provide further details of your request.
– I ever borrow some books with a 7 day loan period limit and I think it is a comparatively short time to read.7-day loans are assigned for course readings as these items are usually in high demand by all students in the same class. Extending their loan period will reduce the number of students being able to get access to the reading materials.
Certain items such as books in Reserve Collection are deliberately set to 7-day and non-renewable in order to enable more students to gain access to the course readings.
All renewable materials owned by EdUHK Library are automatically renewed by our library system. On the other hand, books borrowed from other libraries via HKALL must be renewed manually.
We review the loan policy every year. But users should understand that any change that seems to benefit a user may cause inconvenience to other users under different circumstances. Since a book borrowed from the general collection can already be retained for up to 120 days by undergraduate students or up to 360 days by academic staff and postgraduate degree students, there is currently no plan to further extend the standard loan periods.
When users encounter any problem using the Self-service Stations or other library facilities, they are encouraged to approach counter staff for assistance.
Certain items such as books in Reserve Collection are deliberately set to 7-day and non-renewable in order to enable more students to gain access to the course readings.
Library loan policy is being reviewed every year and the loan quotas for staff and students were last increased in 2016. Based on actual usage, there is no need to further increase the loan quota for undergraduate students.
– Regulation 4.9.1 is not fair, the processing fee is too high. It is recommended that the processing fee shall be capped in 15% of the replacement cost or at most $80, whichever is lower. The processing fee of $80 has not been increased ever since it was introduced some 20 years ago. In fact it could barely cover the actual staffing and other material costs for replacing a lost item, which the Library did not have to spend if the item were not lost or damaged by the borrower.
– Please consider sending SMS/email reminders to users AFTER putting the books into the self-collecting box.Comments noted with thanks. The Library system indeed can send out an e-mail to the user after a book is returned, but the user will receive one e-mail for every book he or she returns. Since users may find it annoying to receive 20 e-mails from the Library if he/she has put 21 books into the Smart Book Return, we decided to disable this e-mail alert function.
– The terms of loan and refund are reasonable.
– Very grateful to have auto-borrowing system which I do not need to worry about the due date

All public PC’s at different areas of the Library are being replaced or upgraded on a 3 to 5-year cycle. Public PCs at Tseung Kwan O Study Centre Learning Commons are scheduled for replacement in the coming 2020/21 academic year.
Closing the TKOSC Learning Commons was a temporary arrangement to minimize risk of infection during COVID-19 pandemic. Allowing only students and staff to access the whole campus is a university-wide arrangement which is also adopted by most local universities for infection control. We are sorry for the inevitable inconvenience thus caused to our External Members, including Alumni. But health and safety of students and staff is our utmost concern which we will not compromise.
As nobody could foresee the development of epidemic, we could only assess the situation week by week and could not give any concrete answers on re-opening or resumption of services. With the improvement of the COVID-19 situation, we are gradually resuming External Members’ access to the Library. We will extend the membership of our External Members for the period affected by campus access restriction, including Alumni holding our free Reader Cards. Details will be announced once available.

A lower temperature is required for preservation of library materials. The current temperature is already higher than international standard and we have found a large number of molded books most likely because of the higher than standard temperature.
謝謝!Comments noted with thanks.
